This is the bird we knew as the Sparrow Hawk, although it was also known as the Kestrel. Over the years, there was some confusion as to whether they were the same; nowadays they seem to have settled on calling it the American Kestrel (there's a similar old-world kestrel in Europe).
They are colorful birds. We have a larger falcon here that likes smaller birds for food. They are not a favorite bird even though they are protected. Thanks Patti.
Thank you Lyndee! (We crossed.) I'm not sure if they're technically related, but he does go after small rodents and grasshoppers and little things like that.
