The cars are coming across from the quaint town of Bayfield, Wisconsin, to travel over two miles to Madeline island, part of the Apostle Islands.

Thanks, Tony!! I appreciate the correction.
Yes, Rettch, it can reinvigorate one or dismay one. I love it up here, but I miss the close contact with my friends from before.

The casino at Red Cliff was pretty humble when we visited there in the mid '90s, joyfulli. We enjoyed it, but I doubt we will ever be back. I think moving into a new environment would kind reinvigorate a person.

Ferry takes 20 minutes

I'm sure most of Bayfield has wonderful views, being on the hill like that. I agree about the cars!!

I'll bet there isn't a building in Bayfield that doesn't have fantastic views all year round. Those three leading cars are too close together for my comfort.

joyfulli

By car, just a few minutes. The speed limit is 15 mph, and it's a little over two miles over there. It's a ten-fifteen minute ferry ride in warmer weather.

So ... Having the snowy lake is somehow an advantage to you Li! How long would it take to cross the snowy lake to reach Bayfield?

joyfulli

Yes, Bayfield is beautiful at any time of year, but it's bustling in the summer. The most famous inn there is the Old Rittenhouse Inn. That's probably the one you're thinking of. I don't know when you came, but up in Red Cliff (the Indian reservation), the current casino open on August 11, 2011. It is quite the facility. We went to a Mother's Day brunch there a couple of years ago. All mothers were free, and we had three mothers in our party and only one man. They were true to their word. If you come again to this area, Rettch, be sure to look me up!!! We have a guest room.

Great picture, joyfulli. We visited Baytown and the Apostle Islands in the summertime and thought the area was great. I remember we visited a casino outside of town on Indian land. There was also a beautiful Inn in town--forget what it was called.

I missed your comment, Dilubreuer. When the water is not frozen, the traffic to the island goes by ferry. It costs around $50 for car and passenger round trip, so I can really only afford to go out there when the ice road is open.

joyfulli

Good questions, Littlebuttercup. The ice road is open nearly every year. A couple of years ago we had a mild winter, and the ice never developed enough to bear the load, so they had to use the air boat. The ice road ends at a place where the cars can get onto the island. We drove around to the state park, which is six miles from the place we started on the island.

Where is the regular road when the water is not frozen?

I love this shot! Is this section of the lake frozen solid EVERY winter or just recently with the Polar Vortex? Can the cars get up on Madeline Island, or do they just go back?
