Why are you reporting this puzzle?

On the same beach, this stuff is also called thorn apple. Inset: inside the prickly pod there are small black seeds. They are supposedly hallucinogenic. But they are also a powerful emetic, so if you try them, I hope you enjoy throwing up while you hallucinate.

Marilyn, it does open on its own. In this inset, I helped it because I didn't see any that were open and I wanted one showing the seeds for the puzzle.

mariolyn

Does it open on its own or did you help?

bluebird42

LOL. Actually that's why I took the photo, I've never seen it right on the beach like this before. Mostly it's in places where the soil is fairly poor (but at least it is soil and not pure sand and pebbles). But it's among grasses and other plants.

If I had been there with my camera...I would of most likely gotten a photo of you with your eyebrows above your hairline some place.:) I wouldn't of thought of Jinson weed as growing on the beach, but then it is known for growing in harsh places.

bluebird42

I'm glad Suzy. I thought he had too much sense for that!

Ah, but I do Ardy, that's why I've learned so much about them. And no, before I eat them I look them up. I remember reading one description of some plant in a book published years ago by Harvard University Press. There was a long paragraph about the various poisonous and semi-poisonous plants to which it was related and then the brief comment that somebody should try eating it to see what happens. My eyebrows disappeared up above my hair line some place and I decided that was definitely not the book I wanted as a field guide to edible plants.

ringleader

Good thing to know, Jacki. Although I don't make a habit of eating plants growing on beaches.

pumpkinhead

Jim listened to your advice, Jacki!
