from a Galway City website(http://galwaycity.galway-ireland.ie/spanish-arch.htm): "The arch is the remainder of a 16th century bastion, added to the town's walls to protect merchant ships from looting. At this time, it was known as Ceann an Bhalla (Head of the Wall)... Its current title Spanish Arch dates from the last century - a reference to the former merchant trade with Spain, whose galleons often docked under its protection." And according to wikipedia, Christopher Columbus visited Galway before he headed for the West Indies - kevin

Never been to Ireland, I would like to visit one day.
I like the face on the house, very cleaver. I wonder why it's called 'Spanish Arch'?
Cheers...Sue

Galway Bay (and practically the only blue sky/sunshine day we had in Ireland!) is a very picturesque part of Ireland.

Comerford House is now part of the City of Galway Museum, which has a new building built for its exhibits behind. To the right is Galway's "Spanish Arch", and unseen behind it is Nimmo's Ard Bia restaurant - kevin
