I agree Gail! 'Agapanthus' is of Greek derivation - 'agape' means love & 'anthos' means flower. In Africa where they originated they are known by various names - African Bluebell, African Lily etc , and amakrokis2 ( Maureen) called them Christmas Candles!!! I still call them Aggies :))))
Rob, there are two ways to name plants: common, or vernacular, names, and scientific names. I'm sure Lily of the Nile is the former, and agapanthus is the latter.
Thanks Maureen! I'll keep you posted - each day a few more buds open!! We have the plain white and deep mauve here too - but when I saw this one I just had to give them a try! This is their first flowering, as I only planted them last spring. I like your name for them - very apt too!! It fascinates me how the same plant ends up with different names around the world :)))
Beautiful with just a hint of colour. Masive bloom! Thanks robyan we wait in anticipation, for a photo in full bloom. We have a white and deep lilac variety, also just coming into bloom,we nickname them Christmas Candles, in S.A.
I've seen Ami - 'loveydear', who lives in Portland, refer to them as Lily of the Nile when she posted a photo of one - so I'd say they're the same plant Gail. I'd never heard that name before - we just call them Agapanthus or Aggies for short!! When you Google either name they come up the same!!
Thanks Deborah - will do :)))
That's good news Shirley!! Yippee!! I know you badly need it! This one has lilac/mauve along the base of the flowers - Queen Anne I think it's called! I'm hopeless with names of plants! Thanks Shirley!
I hope it is snooker!! We just had a storm pass through & we had hail!!! It looks OK from the house though! I'll check it when the rain stops.
I don't - but both my neighbours do though Barb. Thanks!
Hard to imagine isn't it Dave!!! I counted about 1/3 segment and it was 20 - so there's at least that number!! I'll keep you posted! Thanks.
It sure does Mary - much better than hosing! And we just got another storm with hail and about 1/2"!! Thanks!!
Thanks Cathy - after 3 very dry, warm months we're starting to have some decent falls!! It's greened our brown lawn up in about one week!! We sure needed it!
Thanks Prue! I'm glad you got some rain too - we had 15mm. I bought 2 white Aggies last year & this is the first time they've flowered - but my neighbours are pretty sparse on flowers due to the dry weather!
Thanks Lyndee - we seem to have something in flower all year.
Beautiful shot, Robyn. I'd love some white ones...mine are all lilac, except the black ones I bought, which died for whatever reason I'm not sure about. We had 14mm last night and it has been the wettest November since we came here at the end of 2002 - 154.5 mls, or 6.18 inches in the old money.
