We have Giant Desert Scorpions here in Arizona and also smaller Bark Scorpions, which are more venomous.

Mariposamia

There are lots of them here, in Florida. One day, cleaning the front porch, I was stung. I immediately put ice on the spot, to keep the venom from spreading, and called my doctor, to see if any of my medicine was allergic to it. With the problem solved, I went on about my business, having covered the site with a bandaid (smile - happy ending!).

How sad. Not surprised your sister cried. Children's passions should be nurtured.

My sister loved bugs, brought one of these in the house one day. She was holding it between her thumb and index finger, saying look what I found. It's stinger was flicking the air between her thumb and index finger, unable to strike it's captor. Dad yelled at her, . . "DROP IT"! It hit the floor, and Dads foot (with his shoe on) landed on top of it.
My sister cried, . . her bug was lifeless.
No one really got hurt but the Scorpion.
