I had the same question as you! So I tried to find other pictures of this castle in order to get my answers. That 'thing' is the end of an old ruined tower of the castle, part of the castle that hasn't been remodeled like the rest of it. This castle is privately owned! That means that there must be some wealthy people living in there! The vast view from the casle cannot be described in words! One can see miles far away and many of the beautiful turns of the Rhine river!
