On July 9, 1893, when a young black man named James Cornish was rushed to hospital with a knife wound in his chest, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, a pioneering black surgeon, performed a desperate operation that helped set the stage for modern surgery.

Dr. Dan cut a small hole in Cornish's chest and with Cornish's heart beating 130 times a minute beneath his nimble fingers, Williams closed the wound with catgut.

Cornish survived. Williams' operation is generally considered the first successful open-heart surgery.

Well I guess I should be celebrating as I survived open heart surgery in 1982. Thanks Mandy

Amazing story, Mandy! Thank you. :-)

It's amazing to think about it Ardy - it's amazing what modern surgeons can do these days, but they do have lots more equipment!! Thanks ♥

I don't know ladywil - I didn't see any mention of that in the article... but could well believe it, thanks :~)

Wasn't that the doctor who had to pretend he did not do it and give his place to a white doctor??

Thanks, Mandy. My friend's infant great granddaughter had open chest and open heart surgery within her first week of life. She survived and been able to lead a normal life.

I could tell that Mandy didn't like the idea of this surgery Josie - she was very elusive when I went looking for her!!! Working nights is always a toss up between enjoying daylight time or sleeping - either way my body clock goes haywire and takes a while to settle down... I lose track of time and don't remember which day, or time of day, I'm in!!! Thanks for the love ♥

Frightening proposition, open heart surgery. Great celebration, great puzzle, images are perfect. Well, except for Mandy, she really doesn't like the sight of blood. )) Hope things are getting better. Working days is probably more work, but it must give you more quality time too, being able to communicate with the rest of the world in their waking hours. I hope that made sense. With His love, oxox
