For a short impression of the Synagogue.:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlrvOzfLFn0

The synagogue is cross-shaped and is characterized by the Moorish style, with oriental-style horseshoe in the windows and galleries and keyhole arches. The oriental style borrowed one to the synagogue in Berlin.
In the Synagogue was place for 600 people. In 1942 the building was closed by the occupiers.
The precious Torah scrolls and liturgical objects were hidden in the vault of a bank building in Groningen. Only about two hundred of the 2800 Groningen Jews survived the war.
The building was sold in 1952. The whole run-down building was later purchased by the city of Groningen and restored. In 1981 it was rededicated.
Since then, the synagogue used as a "shul" by the Jewish municipality of Groningen and as a cultural space for concerts, exhibitions, tours and education by the Folkingestraat Synagogue Foundation.

Thanks Janet Cathy Lia Denise Lorna Tek and Phyllis. I'm glad I could find so much info. It's nice to know some more of it. And indeed it was good that the city bought it. In 2011 they had one more restoration on the outside. Phyllis I hope you will enjoy that day, but I don't think I will like that food. I don't like Oily foods at all. We have special Oily foods too, to celebrate the new year. But I don't eat it. ☺ Cathy thanks for telling that. He must have been in the middle of a hard fight. In Groningen were still many German and tanks. It must have been very bad there. In the last days of the war many civilians and soldiers found there death. Your veteran is one of our hero's.

Thank you Ank, that video clip was good, I couldn't understand a word they said, but just being able to see inside the shul was a treat. Next month will be Hannukah, possible one of the favourite of the feasts which the Jewish people keep, and like all the feasts there are special foods associated with it. Oily foods - to remind the Jewish people about the miracle when one jar of oil lasted 8 days, not the one it should have, So it'll be Doughnuts and Latkes to mention just two for us, oh goody and yummy. Hugs to you both, hope Henk's finger is improving, xx

Beautiful picture. Solitaire is right; it was a great gesture on the city's part to restore the building and let be used as it was intended to be.

Thanks for the link to the video. I too love the stained glass.

How very decent of the city of Groningen to do that sis☺☺
I am quite taken aback.

Wonderful doorway and window!! It is so sad that so many did not survive the war. In the newspaper on Sunday there was article about a veteran from North Vancouver. He told the reporter some of his memories. There was a picture of him (he was 19 years old) and some other soldiers standing in the street with some happy children in the village of Groningen, Holland after the liberation.
