In the abandond mining towns / ghost towns of Colorado, wild burros still roam, descendants of those that worked with gold & silver miners over 100 years ago. We call them "Rocky Mountain Canaries" when we hear them - sometimes when you're far away they do sound like a bird, and tourists can spend considerable time looking in the trees hoping to see them. :)
