Good Friday is the day that Christians remember the crucifixion of Jesus. It is considered "good" because Jesus sacrificed his life in full payment for the sin of the world.

Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane by temple guards after Judas gave him a kiss, for which he received 30 pieces of silver. Jesus was tortured with whips and a crown of thorns was pushed onto his head.

During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, a law prohibited the eating of spiced buns except on Good Friday, Christmas and burials. Since the early nineteenth century, before the introduction of bank holidays, Good Friday and Christmas Day were the only two days of leisure which were almost universally granted to working people. Good Friday today is still a public holiday in much of the UK. This means that many businesses are closed.

In many other countries with a strong Christian tradition such as Australia, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, the countries of the Caribbean, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Malta, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, and Venezuela, the day is observed as a public or federal holiday. In the United States, 11 states observe Good Friday as state holiday.

It is traditional to eat warm 'hot cross buns' on Good Friday. Hot Cross Buns with their combination of spicy, sweet and fruity flavours have long been an Easter tradition. The pastry cross on top of the buns symbolises and reminds Christians of the cross upon which Jesus died. It is also traditional to eat fish on Good Friday instead of meat.

Thanks Hanne, it's good to see you today!

Bless you too Budgy... I'm glad you now know about hot cross buns!

Thank you Jim, I know He will... and you too :~)

I've had neither yet today shazzaanie... we still need to go shopping! I've always enjoyed Dali's work, but this one is quite different... although I also particularly enjoy another other one of his with an Easter theme - "The Last Supper".

I did buy Hot Cross Buns... but we ate them before today!! They'll probably still be in the shops for a few more days yet Barb, so you didn't miss out! Thanks for the appreciation of these puzzles :~)

Nice to see you here texasstar7 - I'm pleased you learned about Hot Cross Buns... and I've just spotted you've posted some fun food puzzles too, I'll be over to check them out soon ;~)

I forgot to buy hot cross buns for today. I know they sell them around the Easter holidays but never really knew why. Thanks for the wonderful puzzle, Mandy, and as always the history and information regarding each Who Knew puzzle. Have a peaceful and wonderful Good Friday! :-)

Well I've stuck to tradition and had my hot cross buns and fish today (although not together I hasten to add. Urgh!). I hadn't realised that Salvador Dali painted this, I always think of strange surreal art when I think if Dali.

I guess this is a 'Who Knew' that we all did but it's good to be reminded. What I didn't know was the part about hot cross buns being forbidden except on special occasions. Thanks Mandy
