I do, Lorna; they're a mixed bag from different editions but they're all appealing. I'll post some more. Water Babies was about a young chimney sweep who is an orphan, overworked, mistreated and starved by his employer. He sits by the bank of a creek one day and falls asleep. In his sleep he dies and awakens as one of the efts in the creek, a Water Baby, and finds love and tender care in the form of the Queen of the water creatures. It's a Victorian story, written by an English author whose name escapes me. A re-read of The Wind in the Willows will bring you back to your childhood, I promise!
No, I don't remember that one. I was a HUGE fan of Beatrix Potter though, and because my Mum got rid of most my childhood books and toys, I bought a few of my favourite stories by her once I was grown up! I still have them, and a lovely book called The Art of Beatrix Potter which covers her still life art work as well as the illustrations from her childrens books. I also read a lot of Enid Blyton, though I think she is out of favour nowadays for some reason. Mum taught me to read before I started school, and I have loved books ever since. My reading tastes generally have altered, but books like The Wind in the Willows remain favourites! I'm going to solve your puzzle now....
I loved it too, Lorna - and I think it's about time for a re-read! As a child, I would daydream about living in tree-trunk houses like theirs, or in Toad Hall, with their cozy rooms and fireplaces. Another book I loved was Water Babies. Did you ever read that?
I have always loved this book, and bought many a copy for friends' children. I'll solve this tomorrow - well, actually today - after I have (hopefully) managed a bit more sleep!
