Calvin Rutstrum is one of my favorite writers and Paradise Below Zero one of my favorite reads. And, if you grew up in Minot you know all about Midwestern winters and what a pain they are. Nuff said.

Wow! That's a lotta snow! None here in England UK so far - just rain, rain and more rain, and very strong winds. We had snow this time last year though.

Reorick 3 - I know what you're saying about not freezing in the winter. When I was 25, I rode a bicycle from San Diego to Tampa (in the winter to avoid the heat of the dessert). I spent two winters in Tampa and when I came north again, I HATED WINTER. It took me ten years to get over it.

As for Minnesota winters, one of my favorite writers is Calvin Rutstrum, whose parents moved to St. Paul when he was three years old. Among his several books, he wrote Paradise Below Zero. What a concept!

Reorick3 - I'm originally from Minot, North Dakota. When I moved to Canada, I went to Montreal, a very snowy city indeed. I now live in southwestern Ontario and it's like moving to the tropics. No, I just like extremes and for here, this is extreme.

I'm happy for you, Blindfingers. That you can find enjoyment in this type of winter tells me you haven't been living here very long. Believe me when I say that the novelty will wear off after a few years. I'm in Minnesota where we've been below zero F. for so long this winter that 10 degrees above zero feels like Spring and I was born here and lived here for 45 years then started moving around the country for work and found that I really enjoyed not having freezing weather during the winter. I did miss the snow at Christmas but not the rest of the winter months. Glad you are enjoying it and hope you are taking advantage of all of this snow and enjoying some winter outdoor sports---like snowmobiling or ice fishing.

MackIntosh, I'm not from this part of the world though I have lived here for several years but the locals say it has been a very long time since they've seen so much snow. For me, the snow is most special but the temps have been lower than usual too. As they say, there is no bad weather, just bad clothing. I'm enjoying my warm clothes!

Hi ! This is Old World calling. How long is it since you had a winter like this ? Which part of it is most special: the temperature, the deep of the snow or is it it's duration?

These pics are from last Saturday and the high winds on Friday night.. I live in town about 20 minutes away and though it blew, it wasn't this bad. Lake Erie is just on the other side of the cottage. We got another eight inches today. I like it. In fact, I'm warming up to winter!

michiganbea

We have some drifts today from the 6 inches of snow and the blowing, but nothing like that!
