Chalice is a permanent sculpture, 18 metres high, 2 metres in diameter at ground level and 8.5 metres in diameter at the top. It has a solid steel base up to approximately 3 metres above the ground.
The leaf patterns illustrated in Chalice are designed to be a reflection of the trees that used to grow in abundance in the area before the city was settled. These are the Mapou, Kowhai, Mahoe, Totara, Karamu, Titoki, Ngaio, Maratata and Koromiko trees.
The geometric patterns of the Cathedral architecture, windows and tiles are also reflected in the leaf patterns, while its shape mirrors the Cathedral’s spire.
was installed in Cathedral Square and officially ‘lit’ on the 10th September 2001.
It was sculpted by Christchurch based sculptor, Neil Dawson.

Love the Chalice!! It stands in front of Canterbury Cathedral in Christchurch. Gorgeous piece of Art Work. I saw this in 2004 - hope to see it again someday!! Thanks for sharing it.
