The World Day to Combat Desertification has been observed since 1995 to promote public awareness relating to international cooperation to combat desertification and the effects of drought. The theme of the 2013 World Day to Combat Desertification is drought and water scarcity.

Freshwater is valuable. Of all the water on Earth, only 2.5 per cent is freshwater. And of all this freshwater, the total usable supply for ecosystems and humans is less than 1 per cent. When demand for water exceeds available supply, it results in water scarcity.

This year's slogan, "Don't let our future dry up" calls for everyone to take action to promote preparedness and resilience to water scarcity, desertification and drought. The slogan embodies the message that we are all responsible for water and land conservation and sustainable use, and that there are solutions to these serious natural resource challenges. Land degradation does not have to threaten our future.

The World Day to Combat Desertification is a unique occasion to remind everybody that desertification can be effectively tackled, that solutions are possible, and that key tools to this aim lay in strengthened community participation and co-operation at all levels.

If you want to know what I'm celebrating tomorrow, feel free to return to this page after 10pm (GMT - UK) when I will post a link to preview tomorrow's celebration puzzle. 141

Thanks Barb - I must admit it was hard trying to find images which demonstrated the problem without boring everyone silly!!

Magda, as you so personally can demonstrate - the changes are evident all across the globe, and I really do hope that somehow it will be posible to reverse the situation... we can only hope and pray, and try to do out little bit... however small in order to conserve energy and water supplies!

Thanks JB, I have to thank the internet!!

While my family in Europe is complaining of a cold summer, and here in Canada, we have hardly a day without rain, my family in Pakistan is suffering from 45 to 48 degree F of heat. The climatic changes are dramatic and it is almost too late to reverse our false policies. Thank you Mandy for pointing out this problem.

Thanks for another very informative puzzle, Mandy. You have used some really good images to show the problem of fresh water scarcity experience by so many.

It seems our climate is all out of kilter Ardy, with too much rain in some areas and too little in others. It's a shame the puzzle was posted out of sequence, but I will make it public tomorrow instead!!

With all the rain many of us have been experiencing it's hard to realize that there are areas that need it. So many floods ruin some areas while others are ruined because of too little water. Thanks for this information, Mandy. Your puzzle shows the need so graphically.
