I think one must need a guide to interpret all of the details. Must be some interesting history represented. As to the quantity of food, well, I'm speechless!

Thanks so much for bringing this artist and this painting to our attention; I think it's totally worth studying. . . lots of interesting facts to be seen.
Daisyjune: your thoughts were exactly mine, I would have never made it as a housewife back then) . . . gimme my refrigerator, can you imagine how quickly food would spoil then?)

It all looks relatively edible, cept maybe the squirrel (?) in the grape bowl.

What a fascinating painting. There is much information to be gleaned from a realistic painting like this. Many folks prefer abstracts to realism, but thank goodness there were painters such as this to record the times. (And thank goodness I wasn't a cook or kitchen maid back then!)
