This would look nice in my yard, but the petunias only last a short time in spring before it gets too hot here. They'd have to be replaced within weeks with another tougher bloomer for summer. Hot sun, so Impatiens won't work. Periwinkles, maybe. Suggestions?

Thanks, everyone, for your advice and suggestions. I have narrowed it down to either red Periwinkles or the low growing, mounding Phlox. I'm leaning toward the Phlox, but whichever one I find first is probably what I'll end up with. I'll be sure to photo and post it when I get like I want it.

Very nice photo

Looks so VERY lovely! Thanks so very much tex!!

Lovely pic ts. I'll have to check that sweet potato vine. Someone suggested plumbago and it's pretty hardy. I saw New Guinea impatiens growing in Queensland and loving the heat there. Very humid though. Bouganvillea is a climber too but now have dwarf varieties. What about agapanthus - lovely blue and/or white flowers in summer? Seaside daisy grows well too - it dies back at the end of summer and comes back in winter. Hope this helps.

Thank you, Joyfulli & RR. I love these contrasts too. I don't see Coral Bells around here often. I'll have to look them up to see if we can grow them. We don't have so much trouble with bad winters, it's the brutal heat in summer that you have to plan around. I hate to spend a lot of money on stuff like petunias that won't last long. I usually get a few for baskets or pots, but not a mass planting, would be too expensive and labor intensive for just a few weeks. Thanks for your suggestion.

robryan

I love the contrasts here tex - very pretty!!

joyfulli

The color combination is very pretty, but I understand what you mean about a short-lived splash of red with the petunias. Can coral-bells grow in your area? They can have red foliage along with the little bells on thin stalks. They would provide long-lasting color.

texasstar7

Hey thanks! Wanna help me plant them all? That bed is all ready. Actually the fun part is the planting, I don't mind that at all.

warbler

Great color contrasts, Tex. Good luck with your choices!

texasstar7

Thanks, Laura, Gracie, Mountain and Chickie. The petunias look great, but they don't last very long. So I'm looking for something tougher, but am thinking about either Phlox or Poppies or Periwinkle. Maybe all three with mixed colors?

chickiemama

Very pretty tex.

mountain

Another beautiful post thanks

Graciela

They are beautiful Tex, you can sent them to me, they'll be very happy here!!

laurajane

I don't think I can help you, either, as I live up north and don't know what grows best down there.

texasstar7

Trish, don't work too hard, save time for the Jig! Aggie, I gotcha. That would be pretty. Thanks, PLG , Lyndee, Aggie & Trish.

lyndee

A beautiful flower bed. Can't help you Tex. I'm a real dummy when it comes to flowers.

PLG1958

Terrific set, TS! Thank you!!!

trish505

been busy working. sigh. but back from time to time now and loving jigidi! hope you are doing great. i always love your posts.

Well hi, Trish! Long time no see. I have Esperanza, but it grows tall and shrubby. I hadn't thought about easy and pretty Mexican Petunia, that would be a great selection. I love this sweet potato vine, and they have such great colors now. Mixed would be pretty too, the dark plum with this light green. Thanks, Trish!

trish505

the sweet potato is easy here (central texas) does well in sun or shade. maybe mexican petunias? plumbago? yellow bells (esperanza)? sounds like a Neil Sperry question... thanks for a pretty post Ms Tex!

texasstar7

Thank you, Aggie, yes it is Sweet Potato Vine, and I fell in love with it last year. It's very tough and pretty. What do you mean by hug the ground? I need something that will grow some taller than the vines, but not much. Dolly, poppies sound great! I might try that. I've not had any luck with balloon flowers, and morning glory is a vine. Marigolds would do fine, too. And I could mix them (or poppies) in with mums, since the mums only bloom in fall. That way I'd have constant blooming. Great suggestions, everyone, and I thank you. MR, Petunias only do well here in spring. When it starts getting hot, they look puny and then die off. You're probably in the same boat because it gets too hot there.

Maryrob

It's beautiful Tex.I am not very good with petunias but I have great luck with the patato plants.

I would love to give you suggestions Tex, but here in Canada we can grow these petunias & impatiens. However, from looking up in my books for your zone, here is a few suggestions: Portulacus, Dwarf morning glories, annual poppies, lavateras, love-in-a-mist, balloon flowers, marigolds, gloriosa daisies, lavender and chrysanthemums.

texasstar7

Anezka, we have brutal summers here, and very little winter. Temps are well over 100 (sometimes 111) for days on end for several months in summer, so some flowers do not do well here. Thanks.

texasstar7

Anezka, yes the red ones are petunias. I have never seen wallflowers, but just googled them. They are very nice. However, you never see Asters or Wallflowers around here, so they may not be a good choice, and also may be hard to find. Thanks for your suggestions, I'll look for them both.

anezka

I like asters and summer Wallflower

anezka

I think the red flowers are petunias

texasstar7

Ooh, I love phlox, and there's a lot of colors to choose from too. Pansies, not so much, except in winter when there's nothing else. Thanks, Denise.

bentleyd

Pansies or phlox
