This is what Lynn Hetherington Becker had to say about her mandala stairs:

"Hi! I am a self-taught artist in Columbus, OH. When I moved into my home in February, the stairs were painted a flat gray. I decided to spice them up and began painting a mandala on one of the stairs.
The project took off and one full staircase later, my home has amazing new life. I recently began painting staircase #2, and now we are moving again! Hopefully I’ll be able to continue a new chapter of the stair project in our next home!" (http://www.boredpanda.com/the-stair-project/)

But practical.

I think if I were painting detailed designs on risers, I'd paint the design on heavy cardstock and then glue to the risers. I know--lazy.

Bill thought we are looking down the stairs rather than up, hence his comment about the risers. And he was correct (see one of the other comments). Although, if we are looking down rather than up, which we are, we can't see the risers - which may well be painted. Now I've confused myself, cokefloat. On top of having blurry eyes and an aching back. :-) Thanks so much for your comments!

??? Aren't the painted parts the risers? I honestly cannot imagine how she was able to paint even one. My back hurts. And my eyes are crossing. These steps simply wear oneself out!

Bill_I_Am

I think she should paint the risers as well as the treads! :-o

Bommom

Egad! I'd need a stair-glide stairway lift, for sure. :-)

patw

Good on you, Bill!!! It would take more than a handrail (which I'm not seeing) to use these with any speed.

nanlein

Bill is right - check out the website. Now I know for sure I'd never make it down these without going head over heels! nan

Bill_I_Am

You mean we're looking up the stairs? I was hoping we were looking down. :-)

patw

Could help explain those top two.

Bommom

That was a fun puzzle to put together. I'm trying to picture just how Lynn painted the risers. I guess you fold yourself up like a pretzel for a good part of the day. Maybe by the end of the day she's unable to stand up straight.

I think those two plain blue steps she didn't get to would be the ones that would take me out! Thanks, Florence and nan. It's fun to be back. I went up to Buffalo for my daughter's wedding and a nice family visit. :-) Marian, what kind of drops should we all be using??? Judiths, how much money do you want to place that the next person tried their best to finish the job?

nanlein

amazing! I've gotten glasses again, progressive lenses, and am having a hard time navigating perfectly plain steps. Think I'd have trouble with these, maybe should just admire them from the ground floor! Thanks, Pat. Glad you are back. nan

judiths

What intricate detail wonder what the next occupier of the house did, thanks?

Marian_Black

It was fun indeed Pat...I think I may have to put drops in my eyes now, all those beautiful patterns... LOL...:)

Fun puzzle and a lot of work for the artist! I'm not sure I would ever attempt such a project if it wasn't my "forever" home. Glad to see you back, Pat!

patw

That was fun!
