He probably did not think of himself as "African-American" as the term did not exist in the 19th. century. I doubt if his wife's family would have thought his color was something that needed to be mentioned on his gravestone. She was a member of the Brown family, one of the Chappaquiddick Indians still living there in the 19th century.
The Martha's Vineyard African American Heritage trail has documented that he is the only island African American Whaling Captain.

How interesting. He's not identified on his grave stone as African-American; just as Captain.
