"This is a courageous painting. On the right, Khakhar leans over a balcony, naked, looking at the village scene before him. In the centre, an elderly man rides a donkey with a young man by his side. The same pair appear at the bottom of the picture, this time digging the donkey’s grave. This is a recreation of Aesop’s fable about a man and his son taking their donkey to market. As they pass people on the road, some laugh at them for not riding the donkey, others chastise them when they do. Eventually the donkey dies, and the father says to his son, “Please all, and you will please none.” Khakar used the fable as a metaphor for his coming out – the first artist to do so publicly in India. He realised he’d never please everyone, so he may as well please himself."

It was a good one. They both had good points. Just a study in human nature and why we do what we do. lol
People really are pretty funny at times.

Bommom

Nor had I heard it, but I pictured hopping out of the house on one foot. I'm a both-socks-on-first sort of person.

jals

I have the same problem Bill. I wear arch supports. I have problems finding shoes that are comfortable.

Bill_I_Am

No loafers for me, Gayle. They hurt and drive me crazy. My instep is too high.

I don't remember that argument, Judy, but it sounds typically funny!

jals

Do any of you remember Archie Bunker's argument with his son in law, Meathead, on how to put on your shoes and socks. Archie said you should put both socks on first and then both shoes. Meathead said you should put one sock and one shoe on so at least you could keep one foot dry if you had to get out of the house in an emergency.

Bommom

Wear loafers.

In the case of a mat, he has my permission to stand on his bed.

Bill_I_Am

It's more of a mat than a mattress that he's standing on. In summer it's common for Indians to sleep on the roof or in the yard, because it's so hot. He's lucky to have a balcony to sleep on.

I also put my socks on by standing on one foot. But I have to put my foot on the footboard of the the bed to tie my shoes.

jals

lol Gayle. I put my shoes and socks on usually by sitting on my bed or a chair and then I make my bed afterwards. We weren't allowed to stand or jump on our beds. lol I still have a problem with adults who think it's fun to jump on the beds at a motel. In my opinion that's destruction of property. I guess I'm a kill joy.

Bommom

And, it looks like he is standing on his bed. See the pillow at the far end and the blanket draped over the wall in front of him.

We were never allowed to stand on our bed when we were little (or even grown up). Heck, we weren't even allowed to sit on the edge of our bed to put our socks on. To this day I put socks on by standing on one foot. In old age, I guess that's good to help maintain balance.

Our president has really small hands...

Bill_I_Am

Grotesquely big!

jals

He had really big feet.

Bill_I_Am

Bhupen Khakhar certainly has a fanciful way with colors and perspective, doesn't he? What fun paintings! Thanks, Gayle (and Nev).

Bommom

Icing on the cake. Thanks, Nev. :-)
