Australian natives -- Sturt's desert rose
Why are you reporting this puzzle?
The Northern Territory gained self-government in 1978, and adopted the Sturt’s Desert Rose, Gossypium sturtianum.
The plant has a life span of about 10 years, growing from 1-2 m tall and 1-2 m wide. The flowers are hibiscus-like, with five pink to mauve petals about 5cm long. They are arranged in a whorl with a dark red centre. They can be seen for most of the year but peak in late winter. The flowers close soon after cutting, so they are not suitable for cut flower arrangements.
The mature leaves are usually dark green and oval in shape. The fruit, a capsule, is about 1 cm long and contains many small seeds covered with short silky hairs.
