Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Since 16. February our wheely bins were taken in and we need to use ORACs from then on.
ORAC (Dutch for Ondergrondse RestAfval Container which in English means Underground Garbage Container) were emptied for the first time yesterday after dark at 8:40 pm.
The ORAC gets lifted out of the ground and is placed above the opening in the truck... the 'floor' of the ORAC opens and the garbage falls into the back of the truck after which the ORAC is placed back in its foundation under the ground. Easy peasy ☺☺
I took pictures of this "premiere" through double glazing without flash so it's not with the brightest result.
The man standing behind the truck operates the whole procedure with a remote control/joystick....but judging on his pose to see it goes well I bet he will get a neck hernia in a near future?!
For those who haven't followed the process here's a picture of what an ORAC looks like at street level (the lid to put the garbage in is at the back).

How interesting! Thank you for sharing it with us!

Thanks for this pic Impie. I also thought it must be early morning so I was surprised to know it's at night. The bin is certainly bigger than I had originally thought. These special trucks must have cost a fortune but I guess the powers that be have done their sums and decided the new system is cost effective most likely because they require less manpower which equates to less Euros outlaid on wages etc. It's interesting to have seen this process from the very beginning. I think almost every country in the world is looking for new ways to deal with their garbage as it is a growing problem. ☺☺

We have regular and organic recycling in Vancouver, too. We pay a 5 or 10 cent deposit (depending on the size) on pop and liquor tins/bottles, and fruit juice containers...and my husband has become a "dumpster diver" since moving here as neighbours simply put their containers in the bins rather than return them! ;D

Hi Faye, since many year we seperate different things.....plastic, paper, glass, organics, textile...like old clothes bed sheets etc.. it can be dumped in the special purposed containers situated on the parking of supermarkets.
I have a wheely bin for paper waste which is collected every 4 weeks. Once a week organic waste is collected.
In Holland we pay 25 cts. extra per bottle softdrink and after it's empty you put the bottle in a special machine press the button and you get a ticket and you get a refund of you 25 cts. It's called "statiegeld". We have this for as long as I can remember. It's a good system because the bottles get recycled!

Neat! I wondered how they were going to do that as "tipping" would be rather difficult. Also, you won't have garbage trucks driving throughout complexes so maybe the city will save on gas...a "greening" benefit? Do you separate organics for composting? Vancouver started that a year or so ago.

LOL

That gave me a good laugh-out-loud this morning. As a child I was constantly warned that "Curiosity killed the cat".... I think my mom and grandmother both thought I understood what that meant but I had no idea. By the time I "got it" I was too hooked on curiosity seeking. LOL

Impie

It sure is Atsutsa.....it's not that I'm curious....I just like to know everything...LOL

Atsutsa

Ah, life is infinitessimally interesting when you like to know how things work, is it not?

Atsutsa, I think with the ORACs still not being placed in every area in The Hague, there aren't too many trucks yet that can handle the ORAC. The 'regular' garbage trucks get filled from the back of the truck and these get filled from the top of the back in the truck and need a special arm to pick up the ORAC. I guess once they know how many trucks (and men) are needed to do the job there will be a better time schedule. I've seen ORACs getting emptied by day on Wednesdays in an other area of The Hague. We were promised our ORACs get emptied twice a week so I wonder what day he'll be here again this week. I do hope by day so I can take better pictures! :))

Atsutsa

Fascinating, although I initially thought it was in the early morning dark hours (boo) until I read the explanation. I suppose they have to do thing at whatever time they get there? Or are your services coordinated so that heavy traffic times don't have to deal with city/country services? That would never happen here where every group thinks it has the right to be better than any other group (such nasty competition).
