Why are you reporting this puzzle?

The Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) was proclaimed as the national floral emblem in 1988, although the green and gold have been our official national colours since 1984. Wattle Day is celebrated on 1 September each year.

It’s said the wattle was the first plant to bloom in Hiroshima after the tragic events of 1945. Each year the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra receives 1,000 yellow ribbons from the Hiroshima Acacia Appreciation Society to convey the message, “To wish you a happy life with fulfilled dreams. When a wattle starts to bloom, make a wish and your wish will come true.”

The common name, wattle, is derived from an Anglo-Saxon building technique. Wattles were flexible twigs or small branches interwoven to form the framework of buildings. This style of building was introduced to Australia by early British settlers and species of Acacia were used as wattles.

There are more than 900 different species of Acacia in Australia.

Lovely puzzle, thanks for all the info.

Yes they are Leni. Not as much as the Eucalyptus trees they brought over for lumber and replaced the native oak trees. The "researchers" at the University of California imported the wrong species. The ones they brought over are loaded with oil, no suitable for building but they grow very fast and burn amazingly well. Hence the disaster of the Oakland Hills fire in 1991.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Janet

Hi Sally. I read that they are regarded as a bit of a nuisance in your part of the world -- is this correct??

jan42ful

Leni you can go to AdBlock and make tuxpi "enabled" and then both will work. hugs. I had the same problem.

This is great Leni. We have some Acacia here. They are quite shallow rooted which can be a problem when we have a lot of rain. I used to have one in the yard and my car would literally be "greenish" from all the pollen.

lenird

Thank you tihane. I'm glad I didn't bore you with the long description ;-)

Hi Janet. I tried getting on Tuxpi to create the frame for this one and discovered that now you can't access it if you run ad-blocker software. I know I can use another browser just for Tuxpi, but I can't be bothered!

tihane

Very nice, thanks :-)

That was beautiful and fun Leni, I love wattle but cannot have it in our yard. Well there is a huge one down the back, but not close to the house. It's an enormous tree that was here when we had our house moved to this block of land, it's a Brigalow. Thanks and hugs dear Jigidi sis and I am really looking forward to this series. hugs ♥

Glad you enjoyed it Dottie -- acacias are small trees (about 8-10ft) and are as tough as old boots. The different species flower at different times of the year, so there is always wattle pollen somewhere aggravating people's hay fever!!

Diane, you and Janet can jog my memory when I start running out of ideas!

What a very pretty and unusual flower! I enjoyed solving it and reading the information about it, too. Thank you for sharing, lenird! Dottie
