Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Still more thanks to Bill_I_Am for passing along the attached video which got me inspired to find this. Like my previous puzzle, this is a caddisfly larva -- a humpless caddisfly larva, Brachycentrus appalachia to be exact. They build these cases to protect themselves underwater until they emerge from streams in great swarms of adult winged caddisflies. For more info on how they do this, check out the links below, especially the first one that Bill passed along showing how they do this amazing construction. Great stuff!!

Yes, I can see the larva at it right now: "A layer of salami, a little turkey, some tomato, a bit of Swiss cheese..." ;-)

...that would tickle the roof of your mouth.

Bill_I_Am

It looks like a very tall Dagwood sandwich!

Seek and ye shall find:
"Type - Humpless case maker
Case Type - Cases are four sided (chimney like, log cabin type), consisting of small pieces of wood and plant matter. Cases are neatly constructed with small smooth slats of material, looking almost like a tiny popsicle stick structure." (http://www.delawareriverguide.net/caddisflies/appalachia.html)

Perfect photo and nice puzzle, too. When we were sorting them out in our little dishes and using only a hand lens to look at them, I got the impression that cases like this were made out of bits of plant material. Of course, I never took the time to look it up. :-/

What a wonderful specimen. The case is so perfect. Thanks, Andy.

Bill_I_Am

This is an even more remarkable case. I wonder what it's made of. Thanks, Andy!
