Mom is sitting on the little one to keep it warm I guess. It was 83 so how warm do they need to be?

Nice one, pg. Very pretty mama :)

joyfulli

They ARE vulnerable there, aren't they! I wonder what the infant mortality rate is for killdeers compared to tree-nesting birds? Nice photo, pg!

laurajane

I have always thought that it was a strange place to raise babies...on the ground! How vunerable they are, even with the broken wing trick.

pkin38

Good mommy

Rockysone

Maybe to keep it cool.

eaglefeather

Hard boiled or poached anyone? :-)
I have seen the broken wing thing, how clever!

PLG1958

(Glad to hear that, PG. Thanks for the explanation.)

warbler

And they do the broken wing thing very well!! Nice one, Richard!

photogent

If you get too close Rob either the male or her will do the broken wing thing and get you to follow them away from the chicks.

robryan

Does the Mom make any noise to distract you from the chicks pg?

photogent

Patti when they honker down you have to walk up almost to them to see them. You may not believe this but they blend into the ground so well you will have trouble finding them they just do not move until you are almost on top of them.

PLG1958

She looks a little vulnerable out there in plain sight!

cinderfire

Mama bird is keeping an eye out for all us humans and critters. Very pretty birds.

photogent

I just cut that pasture and will not cut it until they are grown and out of the way aggie.
She does a great job and the male is out on a hunt but will return and stay very close to protect them. At night they go and hide in a bunch of wild blueberries just behind her toto.
ME! Pumpkin I watch over these little ones as if they were mine and will not even think of eating them until they are a lot bigger.

chickiemama

Maybe she is protecting it from the camera person.

Toto

I would think that protection not warmth is the object. Mom's doing a good job, I can't even see the little one.

pumpkinhead

She's keeping them safe from YOU :)
