Agra, India
Beyond the Taj Mahal, new attractions beckon.
Navigating the stunning, sprawling Taj Mahal will get easier when an orientation center opens this year, but 2017 also promises new reasons to venture beyond: Nearby streets have been repaved; the Agra Pavilion, a glass-walled dining complex, will host more than a dozen vendors and restaurants; and the Mughal Museum, a collaboration with the architect David Chipperfield and Studio Archohm, has broken ground. In addition, India’s fastest train and longest expressway now cut travel time from Delhi and Lucknow. — RATHA TEP (NYT)

That explanation works for me, guys.

Bill_I_Am

I was thinking along the same lines--shoo the birds away. But I've never seen or heard of that being done in India so I am not confident in that explanation.

No idea. It's hollow so bamboo. My guess is that he gets to walk around and shoo the birds off the holy domes since there seems to be a flock in the air. Probably gets paid between nothing and a few anna. Probably nothing like that though.
Thanks for jogging the memories by the way.

I was wondering about the stick too. Bill or Tim, is there some ritual involved that you know of?

Great photo. I wonder what the lad is doing with the bamboo, though he and his green cap do anchor the shot so well. Boy, after that sky, it was a challenging slog with all those varied earth tones. Fun! Thanks Pat.

Love reading your memories about places like this. Thanks, guys!

I enjoyed visiting Agra fort, across the street, in 1984. Don't remember much about this mosque. Yes, as Tim says, the shops, crowds, streets all look the same, except now there are mobile-phone dealers everywhere.

When I went there in 1964 the only thing pushed was the Taj and beautiful it was. Never forget it. The other thing I'll never forget is the rickety old taxi that took us down from New Delhi and return. Scared the bejabbers out of me. The near background on the left of shops and crowds was pretty much the way it looked then and apparently still does. Thanks Pat

Yes. You're welcome, Bill!

Bill_I_Am

Interesting puzzle, though! Thanks, Pat.

More complicated than I'd thought it would be.
