The Anderton Boat Lift provides a 15.20m vertical link between the Trent & Mersey Canal to the River Weaver Navigation below. The Lift was built in 1875 and was in continual use until its closure in 1983. Restoration began in 2000 and the Lift was re-opened the following year, 2002.

dondi. I think the main issues were space, water loss and time. A flight of at least five locks would have been needed and a lock full of water lost to the River Weaver Navigation on each run through the flight. The lift has two caissons, each wide enough to hold two narrow boats or one barge with no water loss. I have had the pleasure of using the lift and can confirm that it takes a fraction of the time of a boat running a flight of locks with a lot less effort.


Love these. I grew up with canals which used endless series of locks; it never occurred to me that someone would build an apparatus to get greater height. But really, a lock would work as well, albeit perhaps slower. Is the problem insufficient water flow?
