Italy is home to some of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, and Italian wines are known worldwide for their broad variety. Grapes are grown in almost every region of the country and there are more than one million vineyards under cultivation. There more than 350 common indigenous wine grape varieties in Italy.
But that, in a way, is the joy of Italy. With so many different grape types grown in such wildly diverse regions, from the mountains of the Alto Adige in the north to sun-baked Sicily in the south, there's a wine for everyone. No other country can boast such variety. The real fun is in discovering a wine that is unique to a given part of Italy and speaks of the land it is from.
