Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Hoher See is a lake in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.

"Carus was a german painter and draughtsman. As well as being an artist, he achieved considerable success as a doctor, a naturalist, a scientist and a psychologist. As an artist, he was concerned almost exclusively with landscape painting, although he never practiced it professionally. While still at school in Leipzig, he had drawing lessons from Julius Diez; he subsequently studied under Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld at the Oeser drawing academy. From 1813 he taught himself oil painting, copying after the Dresden landscape painter Johann Christian Klengel, whom he visited in his studio. In 1811 after six years at university he graduated as a doctor of medicine and a doctor of philosophy. In 1814 he was appointed professor of obstetrics and director of the maternity clinic at the teaching institution for medicine and surgery in Dresden.

"He painted on his leisure time, but it was his writing on art theory that made him a leading scholar of his period. In 1831 his Letters on Landscape Painting appeared, in which he attempted to refute the accusation from Cornelius in 1825 that landscape was at most "moss or undergrowth on the great trunks of art." He had taught himself the techniques of painting, and found his own way intellectually."

BJ, you've perfectly described the painting. Thank you! :-)

Bjresh

What an exciting picture! Almost makes me want to be there. The shadow the light throws, the island on the horizon, the sails open . . Thanks Bommom!

Bommom

Is the parachute for jumping out of the crow's nest?

Ohhh yes! Andy's our chef. I'm not gonna eat any kale though. As soon as he brings a crate of it on board, I'm tossing it over. Better yet, I can use it to scrub the deck.

Plumpossum

It'll only take a few minutes to brush up on my navigational skills. Does anyone have a parachute?

Bill_I_Am

I nominate Andy for cook. And yes, I'll be happy to help Leanne with the capstan.

patlander

I'm still game. Between Bill and I we should be able to pull the anchor in.

Bommom

In that case then, perhaps we'd reconsider. As long as you know how to use a sextant and chronometer, you're in. Bone up: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/ancient/secrets-of-ancient-navigators.html

Plumpossum

I'm gonna repair to the crow's nest with my jug of olives until you let me be full time captain. Olive pits rained down on the deck should make for an interesting time.

Bommom

Plum, I was hoping you be our galley chef. You'd have your own confined space to work in, and a gimbaled, wood-burning cookstove with pot restraints. Plus, you could take along your gallon jug of olives. But, what the heck, in your spare time you could climb up on deck and be the captain, too--jack of all trades.

Leanne, here's a video illustrating a capstan. Maybe you should start doing strength exercises now so you can lift the anchor or we'll never set sail. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE5r0BUlT8I

Judy, it takes a village to sail a ship. The more the merrier. Climb aboard.

Elsiesw

Takes more than two to crew this boat. Let's all go.

patlander

I'm ready to volunteer but what's a capstan?

Plumpossum

Can I be the captain?

Bommom

HA! Bill, and Leanne, climb aboard, there'll be plenty to keep you hopping.

Heck, who's going to weigh anchor, swab the deck, and climb the ratlines? Oh wait, the ratlines can be Dave's job, that's right up his alley. Bill and Leanne can man the capstan until the veins pop out on the sides of their necks. I'll swab the deck; that's nice and easy.

Bill_I_Am

Just be safe, you two. :-)

patlander

Judging from his bio, Carus was a very gifted, hard working man. How did he find the time to do everything he's said to have done? A fine painting. Thanks, Gayle.

Bommom

I'll take a sailboat any day--love them! From the look of those sails and that mast, Dave, we'd better have more than two on board. :-)
