Pedaling along a towpath can be risky business indeed. Little margin for error if you have to swerve around a pothole 'surprise'! I nearly went swimming once in circumstances like that along the old Erie Canal. The gods were kind that day ;-) Lovely view though!
This trail was originally used by the horses/mules towing the canal boats. In places the canal was built by constructing a levee to create a water channel, rather than excavating the existing soil. The coarse gravel trail was a bit rough to pedal over, but we counted our blessings it hadn't rained in awhile; we could see bicycle tire tracks deeply embedded in the now-dry trail soil, and realized trail conditions could have been much worse.
