Interesting comment Tahtinha. It sounds like you're describing (the much larger) Blue Jays and many times they are the ones who are guilty of taking over existing nests that other birds have built. They then kick out the existing eggs so they can lay eggs of their own. (I used to like Blue Jays until I learned this. They do have bright blue feathers to admire though.)
Lovely pic of a pretty bird, Sandy. I see that this is an Eastern bluebird. I wonder what kind we will find here on Vancouver Island. They were extinct here, but have just been successfully reintroduced in an area about 80 miles south of here. With any luck, they'll show up here sometime fairly soon (I wish!). Thanks for the photo :)
I've never seen a bluebird before The first time was in your puzzle yesterday. I used to imagine them large and dark blue feathers all over. Thanks a lot for sharing. Sad about the eggs.
Each summer the pairs will have 2 - 3 clutches. and there are 2 more nest boxes down by the woods that I haven't checked yet. So there will be plenty of opportunities with 6 nest boxes available. Even snakes can slither up the poles and get to them. There is hope though.
Thank you jc, Patti, Suzy, Li, JiggyBelle (LOL), Dave, Hanne and tex.
Well Dave, I have bad news to report. I just went out there with camera in hand and the nest with 5 eggs has been raided. The eggs are gone! Dad Gummit!!!
I agree with Jiggy! Actually, it's just wishful thinking on my part. These are the prettiest little creatures, and I'd love to have them here. Thanks, Chickie.
Warming up looks right, Suzy. I thought at first you were despirate for an OLD house photo and resorted to this, Chickie :-). I know, I know, its just the way the bluebirds like them. Any babies yet? Thanks
I am beginning to think that these are beautiful stuffed replicas that you place in perfect position and photograph. (LOL) How on earth do you manage to get such gorgeous photos with beautiful birds in them? Thanks so much, Bird Whisperer! LOVE this one!
